Work experience providers top 20 most frequently asked questions. All the answers relate to Work Experience at Key Stage 4 (Students in their last two years of compulsory education aged 15 and 16 years)
What if the student has an accident?
It should be recorded in your accident book. The school/Xperience should also be informed. If it is RIDDOR reportable then you should follow company procedures for reporting it.

Can I pay the student?
No payment should be made as work experience is part of students’ education. Students may be given help towards expenses i.e. to cover travel costs or lunches. This is always at the employers discretion.

What induction do I need for the student?
They should be made aware of any risks to their health and safety and the measures put in place to control them for example personal protective clothing and its importance. A check should be made to confirm that the student understands the importance of following the health and safety rules.

What support can I expect from School?
School should have prepared the student before they begin their placement. You should also have a contact name and telephone number of a member of staff in school who will support you with any problem or concern you may have.

What hours can a student work?
It is recommended that a student is not asked to work more than an eight hour day. The Working Time Regulations 1998 also apply to work experience students and they should not be asked to work for more than five consecutive days out of seven.
